Music sets the tone for so many things. Movies. TV shows. Podcasts. From lyrics that resonate deep in our hearts, to melodies you can’t get out of your head, music can make you feel happy, sad, rejuvenated… or have the urge to dance. Even for our friends and family who may have hearing difficulties, words have meaning, bass lines can be felt and the movement of dance can bring a lot of joy.

As I stepped into this leadership position with SF IABC for our new board year, I found myself trying to find just the right ice breaker for our virtual meeting. It has been an interesting “pandemic period” for us all and starting our new board year on the right note — pun intended — was at the top of my list.

Music was playing as people joined the meeting. I had the pleasure of seeing smiling faces join our meeting and the chat box fill with messages about the current song playing.

As part of the ice breaker, I asked them to share an important piece of information:

“Name a song that makes you dance.”

Below you will see our Spotify playlist from that ice breaker that we decided to share with all of you. Our playlist reflects the diversity of our team with a mix of genres. We have some standard wedding reception songs to more current hits. This list is “what makes you dance” for our awesome, talented SF IABC Board.

When you are at a loss for what to do to bring a new group together and set a positive tone, we suggest music. It is truly something that brings people together and gives you a little insight on individual team members.

SF IABC welcomes you to add to our list. What song makes you dance that isn’t on our list? Feel free to send your selection to our chapter email. Who knows, this playlist might make an appearance at an SF IABC event near you (or your computer) in the near future.

Here’s to a great year ahead. Let’s dance!
